Couple of days ago quite an interesting event happened in Dresden. There, the world’s longest constructed bus was shown. Its length is 30 meters, height – 3.4 meters, width – 2,55 meters. This bus can carry around 256 passengers at the same time. The developers call this miracle of technology “autotram” (AutoTram Extra Grand).

This unique autotram was developed by the Fraunhofer Institute, engaged in the development of infrastructure and transport systems. The project was conducted as part of the program in the field of transport, which is supervised by the Ministry of Science and Education of Germany. In addition, the new transport can carry more passengers than any other surface public transport nowadays. During its development the issues of sustainability were also addressed. The bus combines an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. Because of this it can overcome just about eight kilometers on a single tanking. Moreover, to drive this new automotive ‘beast’ one will not need to be coached in a special way: the developers claim that management of the longest bust in the world is no different from an ordinary bus.

At the moment the bus is being tested on the roads of the suburb of Dresden. It is expected that in the middle of autumn the autotram will appear on the streets. According to Matthias Klinger, Director of the Institute, this bus can easily replace expensive trams.
